We and many people around us struggle with numerous kinds of hurdles and problems in their lives, which in result cause severe negative and pessimistic behavior in us. Day-to-day problems of life can make one really hopeless, whether these hurdles are related to academic pressure, financial crisis, family issues, peer pressure, social difficulties, being humiliated or bullied, etc. Such things can lead to sad and depressive behavior, causing negativity and despair. Negative thoughts and despair are immensely spreading in today’s generation, or Gen Z, which is a harmful sign for society.
It is actually easier to catch negativity rather than positivity; we as human beings more likely tend to attract negative energy from hateful comments, unnecessary criticism, mocking, taunts, inconveniences, etc. While positivity is rare these days in everyone, we need to start spreading it from our own and should highlight the importance and power of positive thoughts to make people more
optimistic towards their lives’ struggles and goals.
Positive thoughts or optimism are mental and emotional behaviors that one keeps towards down times and hurdles of life; it involves being hopeful and determined for the better outcome or future in spite of every obstacle, which helps in tackling situations in a more sensical way and taking reasonable and sensible decisions for the solution of problems.
Contribution of Positive Thinking in Different Aspects of Life:
Positive thinking contributes in many aspects of life benefitting and improving our lives, for which I am sharing my detailed introspection.
• Day-To-Day Life: Positive thinking plays a great role in improving day-to-day lives. One can manage and fulfill regular tasks, duties, and responsibilities with a healthy mindset without feeling any burden of work pressure and responsibilities, just with the help of positive perspectives towards tasks, making daily life much easier and more peaceful.
• Career Building: Positive thinking impacts one’s capabilities to explore and learn about more opportunities and ideas for career building, along with making a person hardworking, enthusiast, consistent towards his or her goals resulting in a successfully built career.
• Mental Health: Mental health is a major aspect of our lives that is badly affected by various factors such as bullying, not being adjustable to society, failures, academic pressure, several inferiority complexes, etc., resulting in depression, anxiety, stress, and many other disorders making us gloomy and depressed. Positive thoughts and perspectives influence mental health effectively and make us feel more optimistic and insightful about our problems and present solutions to our problems to deal with them rationally and in a healthy manner. Positive thinking helps in maintaining a stress-free and relaxed life.
• Physical Health: Just like mental health, positive thinking and attitude attributes a lot in physical health. As we know, mental health and physical health are interconnected with each other in every aspect; mental health being affected by positivity strongly affects our physical health and makes us healthier and groomed in many ways. Being emotionally stable naturally creates a sense of taking care of diet, exercise, fitness, etc.
• Social Relationships: Positive thinking improves social relationships and interactions that provide oneself with healthy insights about social norms, teaches how to be rational and understanding with your social relations without being anxious and socially awkward, and offers adjustments with society.
• Personal Relationships: On the other hand, personal relations such as family, specifically marital and parent-child relations, require a positive attitude for healthy living, which comes from positive thinking and insights towards human relations and spaces. Relationships devoid of positive insights and rational behavior can become a burden or hefty responsibility for oneself without any reason. Positive attitude fosters healthy and long-term relationships, creating joyous family life.
• Self-Improvement: Positive thinking affects our performance in many professional and non-professional aspects of life, making us a responsible and rational human being by impacting positively our personal and social behaviors such as communication skills, empathy with people, understanding differences, handling conflicted situations, etc., which makes life easier and better for us.
Importance of Positive Thinking in Today’s Life:
After reviewing various aspects of life where positive thinking plays an ideal role in every place, I want to share the importance of positive thinking in today’s hectic life.
• Career Achievements: Positivity inspires one to participate in different curricular and extracurricular activities, through which one becomes confident and consistent with little achievements. When one becomes persistent and dedicated towards his or her goals and career without any fear and doubts of failure and disappointment, it becomes a great path for one to achieve milestones, as people with more positive perspectives have the power to deny negative thoughts and a great strength to continue on their goals with amazing qualities of risk-taking and belief in themselves. This persistency provides high opportunities and continuous achievements to individuals.
• Resilience: In today’s world full of challenges and obstacles, positive thinking is a must-have ability to cope. We all face issues like family problems, financial crises, career obstacles, peer pressure, stress, and depression, and the one and only option we have is to resist them with a positive and healthy mindset full of hope. Without having a positive attitude, no one can battle off countless problems with ease, and this is the only thing that makes us resistible against the problems and resilient.
• Foster a Balanced Life: Positive thinking fosters a balanced lifestyle by encouraging people to prioritize their own health and well-being. In the dash for achievement, it’s tempting to overlook personal happiness and health. However, positive thinkers recognize the significance of preserving balance. They are more inclined to devote time to activities that bring joy, calm, and contentment, such as spending time with family, pursuing hobbies, or simply relaxing. By maintaining a good attitude, you make room for joy and fulfillment amidst the stresses of daily life. This helps to avoid burnout, promotes long-term satisfaction, and maintains a healthy work-life balance.
• Enhance Productivity: Positive thinking also improves cognitive abilities such as attention, problem-solving, and creativity, which are essential for success in today’s competitive environment. When you are swamped by negativity, your brain narrows its focus to the problems, stifling creativity and leading to fatigue. However, by maintaining a positive attitude, you keep your mind open to new ideas, solutions, and opportunities, resulting in increased productivity. Even in the face of adversity, a positive outlook encourages people to remain motivated and persistent. It allows them to recover from failures more quickly and continue working toward their goals without being slowed down by setbacks. In the workplace, this leads to improved performance, creativity, and professional advancement.
• Stress Coping: Stress is a major problem in almost everyone’s life. Living in the twenty-first century which is characterized by rapid change, unpredictability, and an abundance of knowledge. Juggling several responsibilities often leads to stress. Positive thinking helps to reduce stress by moving the focus from problems to solutions. Rather than feeling overwhelmed, people with a positive mindset approach issues with resilience, thinking that they can overcome them.
For example, a large task or an unexpected failure at work might cause dissatisfaction and worry. A positive thinker, on the other hand, sees these events as opportunities to learn, grow, or develop new abilities, rather than as obstacles to overcome. This minimizes feelings of powerlessness and increases sense of control, resulting in decreased stress levels.
• Improvement in Mental Health: With an increase in anxiety and sadness, particularly in today’s digital era, preserving mental health has never been more crucial. Negative thought habits frequently exacerbate these mental health concerns by inciting feelings of inadequacy, dread, and despair. In contrast, positive thinking promotes a better attitude by boosting optimism, hope, and self-compassion. Individuals who focus on positive results and practice thankfulness can lessen the frequency of negative thoughts, which can aid in the treatment of depression and anxiety. Even when faced with hardship, positive thinkers are more likely to focus on what they can change and let go of what is beyond their control. This shift in viewpoint results in an overall increase in mental health.
• Gratitude and Satisfaction: In today’s bustling world, while we focus more on negative energy and thoughts in life, we often forget the positive sides. All of us have a very bad habit of noticing mishaps in life only; we never bother to see the positivity that comes with every mishap because we, as imperfect human beings, only believe in achieving what we want, and if we do not achieve our desired goals, we quickly become pessimistic instead of thinking that everything happens for a reason. When we involve positive ideas and behavior in our lives, we start seeing every inconvenience from a different perspective; we start seeing people who are less granted than us, which makes us grateful for the blessings and ease we already have; we start thinking positively and try to think about the good causes of our
little inconveniences. Such thoughts make us satisfied and grateful for what we have and hopeful for better outcomes for our struggles. It makes life actually easier and more content.
How to Construct Positive Thinking?
While going through all the influences and importance of positive thinking in our lives, you must be wondering how to construct positive thinking and how to replace negative thoughts with it, as it is very complicated for all of us to get rid of negativity in this toxic society. So, without any delay, let us explore a few tips to include positive thinking and attitude in our lives.
➢ Begin your day with a positive attitude: Begin each day with positive affirmations about yourself, your life, and your aspirations. For example, you could say, “I am capable of achieving my goals,” “I am confident,” or “Today will be a great day.” Such affirmations unconsciously create positive perspectives inside you towards your life. Every morning, spend time to ponder what you are grateful for. Focusing on what you have rather than what you lack creates a good tone for the day. Replace your priorities while starting your day; instead of doing any useless activity such as surfing television or using your mobile phone right after waking up, it is better to do healthy activities like exercise or yoga, prepare and have some healthy breakfast, and meditate with soulful music.
➢ Be aware of your thoughts: Pay close attention to your ideas all day. When you feel negative thoughts seeping in, stop and deliberately replace them with positive ones. For example, if you catch yourself thinking, “I can’t do this,” counter it with, “I’ll give it my best shot and learn along the way” or “I can at least try to test my capabilities or just for the experience.” Recognize the conditions, people, or activities that cause negative thoughts. Understanding these triggers might help you plan for them or decrease their impact on your thinking.
➢ Rethink your negative thoughts: When you confront a problem or setback, rather than dwelling on what went wrong, ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” or “How can I grow from this situation?” This reframe helps to transform challenges into opportunities for personal growth. Train your thinking to avoid jumping to the worst-case scenario. Instead of thinking, “I’ll never get this right,” try, “It’s okay to make mistakes, and I’ll improve with practice,” or “everyone learns from mistakes.”
➢ Stay around positive people and influences: Your surroundings have an important part in crafting your thinking. Surround yourself with individuals who are optimistic, supportive, and encouraging; make friends who are like-minded and dedicated towards their goals. Their cheerfulness and positivity will improve your spirits and strengthen your optimistic thinking. Engage in uplifting and encouraging stuff. This could include reading books, listening to positive and soothing music, listening to podcasts, or watching motivational videos about personal growth and positive thinking. Try to avoid discouraging people and influences as much as you can.
➢ Stay mindful: Practice being present in the moment without judgment. When you are totally present, you are less prone to reflect on previous mistakes or worry about potential difficulties. Mindfulness teaches you to examine your thoughts without becoming consumed by them, allowing you to concentrate on the positive qualities of the current moment. Practice meditation regularly, it increases relaxation, reduces tension, and allows you to take control of your thoughts. It enables you to identify negative thought patterns and replace them with more positive, constructive ones.
➢ Challenge your limited beliefs: Limited beliefs are thoughts that keep you stuck, such as “I’m not good enough” or “I can never achieve my goals that require hard work and tough skills.” Challenge these assumptions by questioning their validity and presenting evidence to the contrary.
Replace limiting thoughts with positive affirmations that promote growth and confidence. For example, instead of saying “I’ll never achieve my goals,” say “I am capable,” and “I will achieve them with time and effort.”
➢ Learn new things: Learning new things and challenging yourself boosts self-confidence and abilities to perform well. Indulging in different activities and participating in social events and competitions create a sense of acknowledging your capabilities to perform well in every desired field with hope and confidence in yourself.
➢ Stay focused on solutions: When confronted with a difficult situation, focus on finding solutions rather than concentrating on the issues. This method teaches your brain to think positively and take action rather than becoming mired in negativity. Break down large issues into smaller, more doable jobs. This makes them feel less overwhelming and promotes a more optimistic, problem-solving mindset. Always keep reminding yourself that being worried and frustrated about your problems will not get you anywhere, but finding solutions can.
➢ Maintain physical health: Perform physical activities like sports, exercises and yoga causes the body to release endorphins, which are natural “feel-good” chemicals that improve mood and promote happiness. Ensure you get adequate sleep every night; insufficient sleep can cause irritation, frustration, and unpleasant thoughts. Also, take a healthy and proper diet and maintain your weight and fitness. A healthy body leads to a healthier mind, and rested minds are more inclined to be upbeat and resilient.
➢ Target realistic goals: While testing your strength to achieve goals, don’t forget that you can only achieve dreams that are realistic and achievable with hard work and continuous struggles; do not waste your energy and stamina on things that are unachievable even with your non-stop struggles and dedication. Unrealistic targets only cause disappointment and instill negative energy inside you.
➢ Practice self-love: Self-love is mandatory for every living being, which includes taking care of your physical and mental health. Having healthy and nutritious diets, body care, and maintenance practices such as manicures, pedicures, embalming, warm baths, skin care, etc. are the perfect examples for physical health, while for mental health, maintaining your self-peace by avoiding negative people and activities, providing yourself alone time for positive thoughts, rewarding yourself for little achievements, meditation practices, enjoying some time with nature, forgiving your mistakes, being kind and easy on yourself, not taking pressure of everything, and not overthinking are the perfect examples for improving mental health.
After discussing about constructing positive thinking, I also want to share my personal thought that if you firmly believe in the Creator along with doing hard work, He will definitely provide you with what you want and what is good for you. Beliefs also influence our mindset and make us hopeful and dedicated despite every obstacle in the pathway of struggles. Just stay committed to the affirmation that “whatever happens, happens for a reason and unlocks new pathways.” Stay firm in your hopes and beliefs, and everything will become easier.
A path towards positivity is a continuous journey that requires a huge amount of patience and resilience. Sometimes you want to give up and just become pessimistic like before, or you just do not feel like struggling anymore, but hope and belief are the only motivations to become successful as a positive thinker. Gradually, you will start feeling the change in your thoughts just as I do, and trust me, this is the best feeling to being a positive thinker, as it removes every negative emotion residing inside you and motivates you for greater achievements, resulting in making your life easier.
Lastly, remember that being positive does not mean that you will never feel sad or you won’t never get tired of things; feeling negative emotions are part of your life, and it is quite okay! Just don’t let them prolong; otherwise, negativity will be rooted inside you, ending up making your life miserable. This is all I wanted to discuss, and I would love to see comments about your coping mechanisms for negative thoughts. Thank you!
